Summertime tunes need to see you through a long drive to Montauk, keep you company at the beach, and help you mellow out on the roof while you’re trying to keep cool in a heatwave. This season we’re pressing repeat on Chrissybaby Forever, the latest album from Christoper Owens. You might know him as the lead singer of Girls, whose BXJq69JCIAEJHY9album Album was the soundtrack to our summer in 2009 (see: Summertime). Since Girls disbanded, Owens has been exploring new musical territory and putting out records that speak of real, Patsy Cline-era country, a serious Beach Boys influence, fun rockabilly, and straight-up fun indie rock. No stranger to the fashion world, though he’s more likely to wear an old Suede t-shirt than something from this season’s Saint Laurent collection, Owens is buds with Hedi Slimane, was the face of the Isabel Marant capsule collection for H&M, and was featured in fashion spread in a recent issue of Vogue.
Recent shows here in NYC & Williamsburg kick-started our summer, and we’ve had Chrissybaby Forever, along with Album and Father, Son and Holy Ghost, our favorite Girls albums, on a steady rotation ever since. If you’re heading out on a road trip, hit up iTunes and mix up a summer soundtrack for yourself that’s the perfect blend of mellow tunes and sing-along fun. While the recordings are awesome, the live shows really rip it up—we’ll let you know the next time he’s in town. We’ll have a drink. It will be grand.
