The Matt Bernson brand is grounded in New York City both physically and spiritually. We design (chic and comfortable) shoes with real New York City women in mind.
With that spirit, we have collaborated on a new project with like minded New York City-based fashion and lifestyle conscious women, our “MBMuses”, in order to learn from the experiences of the women we admire and who constantly inspire us. While a Matt Bernson Muse has innately good taste and style, it is her sense of adventure, intellect, and confidence that truly make her stand out from the crowd.
Personal stylist, mother of two and downtown girl, Vanessa DiPietro, tells us how she balances family and fashion in New York City.
How does living in New York City influence your personal style?
I’m a total downtown girl when it comes to my style. I’m very casual most of the time, especially since I am a mom of two little ones. Don’t get me wrong, I love rocking a pair of heels whenever I can, but most days it’s ripped jeans and some kicks.
How did you get started being a personal stylist?
I worked in product development for knits and dresses at Victoria’s Secret and prior to that worked in lingerie at Warnaco. I stopped working after I had my son Jake 8 years ago but never stopped missing it. I would help friends and family edit and style their wardrobes every season, and then it kind of organically grew into this little business I get to have fun with.
People’s faces after I get my hands on their closets! When they see how many things I help them purge, and the looks I create with what is left, it is the best! It makes me feel so good knowing I have helped them ease their anxieties about about getting dressed.
How do you balance working as a stylist and blogger with having a family?
The best part about doing this is I have nobody to answer to so I control all my bookings. I usually book clients around my kids’ schedules. As far as blogging goes, I am more of an instablogger. I call myself a ‘faux blogger’ because I don’t have an actual blog where I am on a deadline to get out posts. I just take some pictures and post them to IG and hope people like what they see. So it’s really not much of balancing act for me but it’s more a hobby I have fun with.
Where are some of your favorite places to go in the city?
I just recently started to drink my coffee black so I like it strong. The little coffee shop that’s attached to my building, Inatesso, makes a really rich cup of coffee. I also just discovered La Colombe and I am hooked.
My go to shopping neighborhood has more recently become FIDI. They just opened an Anthropologie across from Zara and a brand new Nobu so I can have my sushi too!
Speaking of food, I am a major foodie, so I love to discover great little finds. One of my favorite Italian restaurants to go to is Emilio’s Ballato. The food is old school Italian and absolutely delicious. It’s a wonderful dining experience. My other absolute favorite place is Red Farm. You haven’t had a soup dumpling until you’ve had one at Red Farm. I mean, I could go on and on.
What TV shows/books are you currently watching and reading?
I just finished watching Big Little Lies and I was OBSESSED to say the least. I am currently watching 13 Reasons Why, and I am completely blown away by it. My friend just gave me the book “How To Murder Your Life” but I haven’t started reading it yet. I hear it’s a page turner so I am excited to start.
Where are some of your favorite places to travel?
Anywhere there is a beach, a palm tree and guaranteed weather, I’m there!
Someone surprises you with a visit and you have to whip up your go-to recipe, what is it?
Fried Eggplant, Shrimp Scampi and Pasta. I’m Italian after all…hahaha
Favorite store in NYC?
For shoes, Matt Bernson of course! For clothes, it’s a toss up between Free People and Zara.
