MBMuse: Kelsie Hayes

The Matt Bernson brand is grounded in New York City both physically and spiritually. We design (chic and comfortable) shoes with real New York City women in mind.

With that spirit, we have collaborated on a new project with like minded New York City-based fashion and lifestyle conscious women, our “MBMuses”, in order to learn from the experiences of the women we admire and who constantly inspire us. While a Matt Bernson Muse has innately good taste and style, it is her sense of adventure, intellect, and confidence that truly make her stand out from the crowd.

Former designer and now fashion’s go-to florist, Kelsie Hayes, talks about how style and flowers go hand-in-hand.

Tell us about yourself. What do you do?

My name is Kelsie, and I am the founder of Popup Florist. I grew up in Maryland, went to college in Southern California, and have now been in New York for 8 years!

How did the idea for The Pop-Up Florist come to life?

Popup Florist was born in January 2016. I originally thought it would just be a fun side project, but quickly after launching I shared the concept with friends and ended up landing a few really interesting projects. People really started coming to us through word of mouth and the brand has grown organically, which is what I’m the most proud of!

What is your opinion on the relationship between fashion and flowers?

I think florals have inspired all designers in one way or another. They generally bring joy to people – so whether it’s through a beautifully watercolored floral print, or just being inspired by the beauty of a flower itself- I think florals are a source for everyone. For me, I love using florals to tell the brands story. It’s a way of tapping into my design background.

What are some of your favorite places in the city? (Coffee shops, stores, restaurants, museums etc.)

My favorite restaurant is Barrio Chino- the ceviche and grapefruit margaritas are a must! For shopping, I love Kirna Zabete and Barneys (who doesn’t?)  The market my shop is in, Gansevoort Market, is obviously my place of work but I love that it’s full of small businesses and allows me to connect with the different owners on the daily.

How does living in NYC inspire your personal style?

I’m constantly inspired just by riding the train or walking down the street, people are so expressive with their style here in a way that you won’t find in many other places. I think my personal style is a mix of west coast and east coast. I love to be comfortable but also really enjoy getting dressed in the morning!

Most recent book you’ve read or movie you’ve watched?

I just read ‘Girl on the Train‘, and had a hard time putting it down. Highly recommended!
